We’re at Hannibal waiting to get locked down. We’re making very good time – for a Sunday, we haven’t seen any rec boats out, but several barges & tugs. We should have no trouble making it back home today! The only hitch could be Willow Island locks. They’re still in restricted locking & only put pleasure craft through on even hours; top of the hours. Hopefully we’ll sail right through then go 4 miles to our own dock.

Sunday- Cruising back Down River

20120826-065054.jpg
We’ve decided to head back Home today. Not too foggy, it’s not rolling through the cabin like the morning we left!
We’ll lock down at Pike Island L&D, then Hannibal L&D and see how much farther we have & decide if we’ll go all the way today.
A quick stop at Rayland’s fuel dock & off we go!
This trip will probably be the shortest, only 160 miles. Next year we’re planning to take more time, go up through Pittsburgh then on up the Allegheny to a marina a few miles up there. Not sure what’s up the Monongahela, maybe we’ll see!

20120825-153245.jpgBoats along the shoreline – rafting together for the Riverfest tonight

The Captain of the “Double D’s Dream” houseboat invited us over for a cocktail. He said he has a full bar, including Tequila with a worm in it.
I think I’ll pass.

20120825-200650.jpg

20120825-211708.jpgWent up & listened to the band. Pretty good – came back to let Bob out then head back up.
They had a wedding out on one of the boats today, reception in the pavilion. Luckily the bands playing drowned out the karaoke from the wedding reception. Classy.

Saturday Riverfest tonight

20120825-085341.jpgThis is a two-story floating house & Sternwheeler belonging to the owners of the marina. It’s pre-fab, brought in on the river by the Vernon C Ledbetter paddle wheel workboat. They live 100 miles from here, not here.
Overkill? I think so.

Yesterday was a busy day for us. We sat, walked Bob, swam Bob, picked up 3 bags of ice, walked again, talked to Gary & Marilyn, ate Sun Chips & red pepper hummus, walked, then had to sit & rest after all that excitement. We’re pretty worn out. Today we have to rest more.
Right now, we’re thinking of heading back down river tomorrow, maybe. If we do, we might go all the way home or stop somewhere around half way. We’re not sure, but thinking really hard about it.

So far today, we’ve had breakfast, discussed the meaning of “quahog”, & talked about the advantages of having our own pet whale.
Yesterday was over 90 degrees, today is going to be about 85. Sunny, shaping up to be another nice day. Riverfest is sometime today or tonight. Supposed to have several bands. Sweet.

20120825-091740.jpgBob in his happy place :-)
Well, the neighborhood is getting busy. Our next door neighbors came down from Pittsburgh this morning for the weekend. Their 1979 houseboat is quite the fixer-upper. They come down every weekend to work on her. They have a lot of weekends yet to go, but at least she’s a runner!
Prince Of Tides is here now, too. She’s a 1966 something or other. Classic boat, I like the crank out, non tinted windows!

20120825-132042.jpg

20120825-133136.jpg Our new Marina-mates gave us a gift! Nothing says “Welcome to the Marina” like a roll of toilet paper. Apparently it’s a pretty hot commodity (restrooms are always out) & they didn’t think we had a head!
It was very thoughtful.

20120825-133545.jpg
Found out there’s Wi-Fi here, thought I’d use my laptop. We asked Gary for the password & he said “I can give it to you, but if I tell you, I”ll have to kill you!!”
Right away, Randy told him, “TELL HER, Quick!!”
Very funny.

It looks like we’ll be heading back down River when we leave here. Not sure when yet. Tomorrow seems like a better day to make decisions.

At Rayland

20120823-174139.jpgPizza for dinner, showers & visiting with our new neighbors.

20120823-194458.jpg
What a great evening! Cool, a little breeze & a clear, starry sky.
We’re staying here at least thru Saturday. We’re 99% sure were not going any further North this trip.
We want to go to Pittsburgh, then on up the Allegheny River a few miles to another Marina we haven’t been to yet. Last time we went to Pitt we stayed just inside the mouth of the Allegheny. (the Allegheny & Monongahela Rivers come together at Pittsburgh; their confluence forms The Ohio River. Mile 1 of the Ohio is in Pittsburgh & it runs over 900 miles, ending at the Mississippi) anyway… We’ll probably plan a trip up there when we have a few more days.
Not sure when we’re leaving Rayland – sometime between now & Thursday.

Getting set for the second night in our new beds. We had new foam cut for the mattresses & had them upholstered. Pretty nice!! We definitely got out money’s worth out of the old ones, they’ve been around!
I guess everything on this boat is very well traveled – we’ve gone well over 3,000 miles on her so far- no end in sight!!
The couple managing this marina live aboard a Sternwheeler (paddle boat) they built. We’d love to build one & travel on it but it’s not very practical for the way we travel & stop. Theirs is “The Gambler” & several others stay in the Marina here. Hope to get a closer loom at them tomorrow ;-)
